On November 19, 2016, Patrol Officers responded to a Spring St. business after they reported the theft of items from inside their warehouse. Officers conducted an investigation and charged Edwin Mercede with theft as a result of their investigation.  He will have a mandatory court appearance in Superior Court in Elizabeth, NJ.

 

On November 21, 2016, Officer David Rodriguez conducted a motor vehicle stop with Markyse Andrews, age 25 of Union, NJ. During the course of the stop, it was discovered that Mr. Andrews was in possession of a controlled dangerous substance.  He was subsequently arrested and charged with the possession and was also charged with several motor vehicle summonses.  Mr. Andrews has a pending court appearance in New Providence Municipal Center.

 

On November 23, 2016, the Police Department received notification that a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle in the parking lot of a downtown business district. Upon arrival, it was learned that the pedestrian that was struck was employed at a local business and was struck after an individual stole items from inside the store and fled the scene.  While fleeing, the suspect struck the employee with their vehicle.  The theft is under investigation by the Detective Bureau.

 

On November 24, 2016, Ptlm. TJ Hoppe arrested and charged Hassan Shamsaei-Far of Berkeley Heights for driving while intoxicated. He was released to suitable adult and has pending court appearance in New Providence Municipal Court.

 

On November 25, 2016, Ptlm. Nicholas Guerriero responded to a motor vehicle crash near Springfield Ave and Ridgeview Ave. The caller reported that a black large SUV hit the curb and blew out the tire.  Upon arrival, Ptlm. Guerriero could not locate the vehicle.  After searching the surrounding area, Ptlm. Guerriero located a vehicle, matching the description, on Charwood Rd.  Gerald O’Connor of Chatham, NJ, was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated.  He was transported to Police Headquarters, processed and released to the custody of a suitable adult.  Mr. O’Connor has a mandatory court appearance in New Providence Municipal Court.

 

At approximately 8:41 AM on November 29, 2016, patrols responded to a one car motor vehicle crash on South Street near Mountain Avenue.  The passenger, David Antonio Portillo, age 46 of North Bergen, was transported to an area hospital where he died as a result of his serious injuries.  The cause of the crash is still under investigation by the New Providence Traffic Safety and Detective Bureaus.

 

 

During the overnight hours of November 30, 2016 to December 1, 2016, the Police Department received reports that 3 vehicles had been entered during this time period in the area of Marion Ave and Bradford St. The vehicles owner’s report that their interior of the cars had been rummaged through, small items and cash were taken.  Please contact Det.
