Joining the New Providence Fire Department

Full Member

To become a member of the New Providence Volunteer Fire Department you must first attend a Wednesday night meeting for an application. The Wednesday night meetings start at 7:00 pm and end around 9:30pm, any time in between is usually good for application questions. Once you have an application and returned it you will be invited to attend the Wednesday night meetings in order to learn your way around the trucks and equipment. The application process usually takes about 1-2 months in which time your application will be reviewed by various committees.

To become a member you must also meet these requirements:

  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • Pass a physical exam.
  • Pass a background check.
  • Be approved by New Providence Borough Council.
  • Final approval by the New Providence Volunteer Fire Department members.

Once approved you will serve a two year probation period where you will be required to obtain Firefighter 1 & 2 training. During this time you will be allowed to respond to fire calls but not allowed to enter a structure fire until training is completed.

Junior Member:

The Junior Firefighter program is open to any individual between the ages of 16-18 years old. The person must be in good physical condition and have permission of parents/guardian. Person must be in good standings in school, community and have had no problems with the law.

To become a junior member of the New Providence Volunteer Fire Department you must first come to a Wednesday night meeting for an application ( Please bring a parent or your legal guardian to pick up an application ). The wednesday night meetings start at 7:00 pm and end around 9:30 pm, any time in between is usually good for application questions. Once you have completed the application and returned it, you will be invited to attend Wednesday night meetings in order to learn your way around the trucks and equipment. The application process usually takes about 1-2 months in which time your application will be reviewed by various committees.

To become a junior member you must also meet these requirements:

  • Be between 16-18 years of age.
  • Pass a physical exam.
  • Pass a background check.
  • Be approved by New Providence Borough Council.
  • Final approval by the New Providence Volunteer Fire Department members.

Once approved for junior status you will be allowed to respond to fire calls, but only to assist with basic functions. You will not have the same privileges as a full member, and will only be allowed in the firehouse when a full time member is present. All juniors must leave the firehouse at 10:00 pm unless parental consent is given. The Junior period is a time for learning and once you turn 18, you will be eligible for full time status.
