The Borough of New Providence was incorporated in 1899 and covers 3.6 square miles in northwestern Union County. The Borough is nestled in the Watchung Mountains approximately fifteen miles from downtown Newark and twenty-eight miles from New York City. The Borough is easily accessible by all modes of transportation with railroad passenger service provided by New Jersey Transit. There are two passenger stations in the Borough and bus service is available locally providing interstate as well as intrastate services. The Borough also provides quick and easy access to Newark International Airport with the interchange to I-78 being located less than a mile away. The Garden State Parkway, Route 287, Route 24 and the New Jersey Turnpike are also close by.
New Providence is a predominately residential community of owner occupied, single-family dwellings. There are also garden apartments and condominiums within walking distance of the train stations. The Murray Hill Inn provides accommodations and meeting facilities for guests. The Borough boasts a vibrant retail business in its downtown area.
The majority of residents in the community occupy executive, managerial, and professional specialty positions with an average annual household income of over $150,000.
The Borough enjoys a Aa3 credit rating by Moody’s Investor Services.
The corporate community of New Providence is comprised of companies with worldwide reputations in their respective sector. Among them are:
C.R. Bard: A leading multinational developer, manufacturer and marketer of health care products with its headquarters in New Providence.
Aircast: Another developer, manufacturer and marketer of medical supplies with a facility in the Borough.
Reed International: One of the world’s leading publishing and information companies, consolidated its R.R. Bowker and Martindale-Hubbell operations in a new facility in New Providence. The former Martindale-Hubble facility now houses additional operations of Reed Elsevier.
The BOC Group: BOC has several of its divisions located in the Borough. These include Airco Bulk Gases, Airco Distributor & Cylinder Gases, the BOC Technical Center and the BOC Process Plant.
New Providence also houses the corporate offices for Aromat Corporation, a subsidiary of Matsushita Electric Works, Ltd.
Several banking institutions serve the financial needs of the business community as well as local residents. The banking institutions located in the Borough include branches of Bank of America, Wachovia, Investor Savings Bank, PNC Bank, Provident Bank and the Borough’s newest resident, Hilltop Community Bank.
The Borough also boasts numerous professional offices representing the medical, legal, veterinary, accounting and consulting sectors.
The Borough’s commercial districts are equipped with fiber optic lines running through Central Avenue, Floral Avenue and South Street providing easy connectivity for commercial tenants.
The New Providence School District consists of two elementary schools, one middle school and one high school. Each physical plant has excellent facilities to provide an educational program of high quality. The high school provides a varied course of studies and attempts to meet the needs of all its students through a curriculum that includes over 140 courses, advanced placement and honors courses, a special education curriculum, community service opportunities and shared time vocational training. The average high school class size is approximately 18 students. The District’s Music Department is among the best in the State. New Providence High School has been ranked among the top ten public high schools in New Jersey, and first in Union County by both the Star Ledger and New Jersey Monthly Magazine.
The New Jersey Youth Symphony is a resident of the Borough as well as the Suburban Community Music Center and Elefante Music. In 2002 the Borough completed the construction of “Centennial Park” at the Municipal Complex which hosts summer music programs and entertainment. The Borough’s library is currently being expanded and construction will be completed in the spring of 2005.
The Borough also conducts a year round recreation program including arts, sports, exercise classes, dance and youth activities. In addition to the Municipal Complex gymnasium, facilities include three playgrounds, an outdoor ice rink, eight ball fields, eight tennis courts and two Olympic size community swimming pools. The Borough is planning its first annual Art and Music Festival for June 2005.
