ATTENTION SENIORS & SOCIAL SECURITY DISABILITY RECIPIENTS:
The State of NJ has again approved funding for the Property Tax Reimbursement Program (a.k.a. property tax freeze program). This program was first made available in 1998. Homeowners currently enrolled in this program should have begun receiving their 2007 booklets in the mail from the State. Total annual income for 2007 must be less than $45,135 for single applicants and $55,344 (combined income) for married/civil union couples. If you have not received your PTR-2 booklet, you must call the State @ 1-800-882-6597. These forms are not made available to us because they are preprinted by the State with personalized information.
For first-time filers minimum total income requirements for 2007 must be met AND year 2006 income must be less than $43,693 for single applicants and $53,576 (combined income) for married couples. You must qualify for BOTH years. First-time filers must have been age 65 or older or receiving Federal Social Security Disability benefits based on their own social security number as of December 31, 2006. Other qualifications apply.
Under this program, any tax increases incurred after the base year (2006 for first-time filers) will be refunded by the State on a yearly basis for as long as this program is in effect.
We recommend that you bring the Verification of Property Tax form (PTR-1A or 2A), which is in the application packet, to the Tax Collection office for completion. Part I of this form must be filled out by the homeowner first.
Any New Providence senior who is NOT already in the program can pick up an application for first-time filers at the Tax Collection office. Applications and complete instructions are also available on the State website: www.state.nj.us/treasury/taxation/. If you have general questions, you can contact the New Providence Tax Collection office at 665-8031 or 665-0631 and we will try to answer them.
The filing deadline is June 2, 2008.
