The Governor is slowly opening up more and more, but it is important to still take precautions and follow all of the safety mandates. Today the Governor announced the following re-openings with health and safety safeguards. More information and details will be forthcoming when we receive them:
June 15th: Child care centers can reopen with restrictions
June 22nd: Non-contact organized sports activities can restart with restrictions
July 6th: Youth day camps, including municipal summer rec programs, can begin with restrictions

The Governor also announced today a short term rental assistance program. The Department of Community Affairs (DCA) will administer an online lottery. When the lottery is opened, households may submit applications and participants will be selected from the overall pool of applicants through a randomized process based on eligibility and the lottery criteria. Applicants selected through the lottery will be eligible to receive up to six months of short-term rental assistance. Households may qualify for the lottery based on the below standards:
Eligibility Requirements
- Must be a New Jersey resident.
- Maximum income up to 80 percent of area median income (AMI).
- Must have been current in their rental payments as of March 1, 2020.
- Must be able to provide proof of impact of COVID-19 beginning on March 9, 2020 when Governor Murphy declared the state of emergency.
- Layoff;
- Reduced work hours;
- Unpaid leave to take care of children due to school and daycare closures; and/or need to self-quarantine for 14 days resulted in a loss of income.

Annual Sapling Giveaway Returns June 6th:
Sustainable New Providence is pleased to announce the continuation of their annual tree giveaway. Free bareroot saplings provided by the NJ Forest Service will be available for pickup on Saturday June 6th from 9 am – Noon. The pickup location is the New Providence Memorial Library staff parking lot. NP Residents only please. Strict social distancing protocols will be in place. All participants must wear masks and one resident at a time will be allowed into the parking lot for tree selection. Those waiting their turn should line up on the Elkwood Ave sidewalk at 6′ distances going toward the American Legion building. We would like to thank our Union County Freeholders for giving us over 2000 masks today to distribute to our front line workers and our businesses that are re-opening. We are very grateful for this generous contribution.
