The New Providence Historical Society is a volunteer organization dedicated to recording and preserving the history of New Providence, NJ.  New Providence is and has been a vibrant community since before the American Revolution, back when it was called Turkey, after all the wild turkeys that roamed the area. Today, it continues to be a thriving community.

Here, we delve into the facts and folklore of New Providence.  For instance, why was the town renamed New Providence? What happened to the turkeys? And, did George Washington really pour salt into Salt Brook?  The Society has a number of resources and activities including the Salt Box Museum, the Mason Room Archives, special speaker events, and the Salt Box Fair.
